Lenovo ThinkVision LT 1421 is an ideal portable monitor

    April 26th, 2012  / Author: Alan

If you are looking for a compact and portable monitor then it would be a good idea to look towards the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421. This monitor has a very lightweight and slim design and weighs just 870 grams without its protective case. If you include the protective case, which comes with the monitor, the wages increase to 1 kilogram, but the protective case is a good idea as it will protect your investment.

The monitor can be connected to the PC by using a micro USB port located on the back of the screen. This is not the conventional way that screens attach to computers, as usually this is done with a special video cable.

Because of this USB connectivity, the laptop is going to be appealing to people without a great deal of computer knowledge as it makes the whole setup process very easy. The only cable that is needed to connect the monitor to the PC is this USB connection.

A great feature about this monitor is that the USB cable also provides all the electricity the screen needs. Just in case your computer does not have enough power from one USB port in order to light up the monitor, it is possible to connect a second USB cable in order to provide additional power.

The protective case is also a great way for the monitor to be transported and even when you have set it up, it is still useful, as it can be used as a stand. Unfortunately, while the rest of the design has been well thought out, the cover is difficult to put on and remove, which is a bit of a letdown.

There is a special driver provided with the screen that allows you to connect the screen by USB and this sort of technology is something that has been more prevalent in the market in the last few years. Unfortunately, this software means that you often suffer from a lack of smooth gradients and the colour profile of the screen cannot be edited.

The angles that the screen can be viewed at a generally not very good. If you are looking at the screen from the side, it is definitely going to be acceptable, but as soon as you start to look at it from above, or below, the colours start to go seriously wrong. The screen does perform well in most lighting conditions.

Accessories for Apple products announced by Computers Unlimited

    April 25th, 2012  / Author: Alan

Computers Unlimited have recently announced the release of a new product which has been designed as an accessory to go with the MacBook products from Apple; the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. The device is a stand that is very sleek and portable and has an excellent cable management system that will allow the laptop to benefit from connections usually associated with desktop machines.

On top of this the stand is also very compact and its users the least amount of possible desk space. This is something that has been designed to be very easily transportable so it is perfect for people who are often working outside of the office. It is also possible to easily connect a laptop to a larger screen through this stand and this will be useful for people when they are in the office and have access to a larger display.

The new product is available for sale on Amazon and is also available from many of the Apple stores around the UK. It is currently retailing for £35 for the MacBook Air size and around £40 for the model designed for a MacBook Pro. This device is a useful purchase for all MacBook owners.

BAE Systems announce the development of new battery device

    April 24th, 2012  / Author: Alan

The British defence company, BAE Systems has recently announced they have developed a new battery technology which is capable of storing an electrical charge within the gadget itself. The company have called this a structural battery and it is capable of working with any device that requires electricity, from a car, to a mobile phone.

There are many applications expected for this type of technology as it can reduce both the weight and size of the device. One of these uses, which is particularly appropriate to BAE Systems, is the ability for it to lighten the load of a soldier’s backpack.

The idea behind the technology is that the charge is stored in a specific composite material which can be moulded into 3-D shapes. This material is capable of holding the battery charge required for the device, and this can be moulded to be the shape of the device. So far the technology has been demonstrated by the company in an unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Ministry of Defence has already said that it is interested in British troops utilising this technology and has acknowledged that it will also be useful in non-battlefield applications. It allows electronics to have a much more efficient design.

New Acer Aspire Ethos 5951G laptop let down somewhat by screen quality

    April 20th, 2012  / Author: Alan

The Acer Aspire Ethos 5951G is a laptop that will be particularly good for multimedia as it is powerful and has great sound. It is only let down by a lower resolution screen than you might expect, but in most ways this is a fine laptop.

The sound is particularly good and it has been licensed by Dolby which really does add to the quality of audio playback. The screen is 15.6 inches and the resolution is just lower than you might expect. It is only capable of 1366 x 768 pixels which means that they are visible to the naked eye. This means it is not capable of playing 1080p high definition video and this will need to be down scaled. However, on the plus side the screen does offer excellent colour depth.

One of the reasons this laptop is going to be so popular is because it is an excellent combination of a work laptop as well as one that can be used for play. The computer has a full-size keyboard with a number pad to the right-hand side which makes data input very quick and easy. The arrow keys on the keyboard will be too small for most people, but it’s not really a huge issue.

The computer comes with a fast Core i5 processor as well as eight gigabytes of RAM. The hard disk is also significant with 750 gigabytes of storage space. The battery in the computer cannot be removed but it is capable of running for over eight hours which makes it one of the best performing laptops currently on the market, and not just in its class. The battery life of the computer might suggest that it would be good for travelling with, however it is a rather heavy device at over 3.3 kilograms.

The Scroll tablet is let down by several design flaws

    April 19th, 2012  / Author: Alan

The Scroll is a new seven inch tablet device and it is housed in an aluminium case which means it weighs around 440 grams. This makes it only around 30 grams heavier than the Playbook but despite this it feels much heavier than the other tablet. The tablet computer has two gigabytes of flash memory and a one gigahertz processor. It is possible to increase the amount of storage on the device through the use of a microSD card slot.

The device is targeted at the more affordable end of the market and has a price of £100. It is running the Android operating system from Google and this means it has large screen icons which make the interface look rather unsophisticated. Despite all of this, the price of the device is going to make it very tempting and people will be able to overlook its small flaws in order to get a tablet device for £100.

The touchscreen on the device can be tricky to use sometimes with the interface but fortunately there are physical buttons around the tablet which make it easier to use. There is an HDMI out port on the device as well as USB connectivity which will appeal to many users.

Unfortunately, there are several flaws with this new tablet. It comes installed with the popular Angry Birds game, but when it is loaded up it doesn’t seem to work very well. Even when you install various lightweight applications on the device, it is going to struggle to run them. Even loading a basic programme, such as a twitter client can slow down the device significantly.

The screen resolution is also rather lacking and many of the icons that will be displayed on the homepage will appear rather fuzzy. Even standard apps such as BBC don’t display properly on the device.
